Jesse Nusbaum Archive

Jesse Logan Nusbaum (1887-1975) was hired as superintendent of construction of the Santa Fe exhibit at the exposition, to be known as the “Painted Desert” or “Indian Village,” highlighting the culture and accomplishments of Native Americans. Nusbaum was a skilled photographer who took many photos of the Painted Desert. He was the first archaeologist hired by the National Park Service. In 1921 he became superintendent at Mesa Verde National Park.
